The idea of Rainbow ECD was born after the Pastor, from South Side Church (prev. The Peoples Church) Sun Valley, spent some time in Masiphumelele and witnessed the need for intervention for the children in the area.
Shortly after, a team of willing and skilled people formed a steering committee and they also became the initial board for the NPO created. A principal, Ntombizintle Cornelia Musekela, was identified and sent for further training and development with Safe and Sound in Johannesburg. On completion she started a small informal crèche at her home with most of her support coming from the church.
The entire vision of Rainbow ECD changed after Mr. Al Richie identified the need for sound structure in the board and introduced us to Rotary Club Newlands. Through extensive negotiations with the community, local councilor and Department of Social Development (City of Cape Town), Rainbow ECD secured the land and allocation of funding by donors through Rotary for the construction of a new facility for Early Childhood Development.
Our building project, although exciting was not absent of challenges. After the initial foundation of the building was laid further delays caused the building process to stop for 4 months. Eventually the building was completed on 26 April 2016. The official opening took place with great fanfare.
From there, the difficult and cumbersome process of registering our school was started and with many other processes running simultaneously this was really challenging for the management of Rainbow ECD. We entered into a process with the City of Cape Town for a Facilities Agreement which took months of negotiations. Eventually temporary registration was secured on 8 September 2016 and the Facilities Agreement was received on 2 May 2017. After much work had gone into it, our long term registration was finally secured October 2018.
